A black eye is formed by an injury to the face or head.  When blood and other fluids collect in the space around the eye, it causes swelling and discoloration around the eye. This is known as a black eye or shiner. Though the condition is known as “Black eye”, the eye is not actually injured, only the tissues around the eye get discolored. The skin around the eye is loose and has fat deposition underneath it. This causes easy fluid accumulation in this area.  Most of the black eyes are minor injuries and they may heal on their own. When the black eye heals the swelling around the eye disappears and the bruise also fades away. The black eye will appear as very dark purple initially and as it fades it may change the color to light purple, greenish, or yellow. In some cases the black eye is a warning sign of serious injury to the face or head.
