There are different causes for the appearance of a black eye. The most common reason for a black eye is the blow to eye, nose, face or forehead. Depending on the position of the blow one or both eyes may be affected.

Keep Your Head In Elevated Position - Keeping head in the elevated position will reduce fluid accumulation, especially when you are sleeping.  Use two pillows to keep the head in an elevated position. This will reduce swelling. 
 
Hot Compress - After 48 hours it is better to go for hot compressions as this will speed up the healing process. Give hot compressions every hour and it should not last more than 20 minutes. 
 
Clean The Area - Clean the injured area with mild soap and water without applying pressure. This will prevent any infection of the skin around the eye.  This will help in easy healing of the black eye. 
 
Natural Oil - You can use any natural oil to slightly massage the affected area. This will help to relieve the swelling faster. The best option is olive oil as it has antiseptic properties. Do not apply pressure while massaging as this may cause more pain. 
 
Raw Potato - This is a powerful and easily available home remedy for the black eye. Grate some raw potatoes and place it over the eye. Leave this on the eye for at least 15 minutes. This will decrease the swelling significantly. You can also use sliced and refrigerated potatoes to keep on the eyes to get rid of a black eye. 
 
Cucumber Slices - You can use chilled cucumber slices just like potato slices to get rid of the problem of a black eye. The coolness of the cucumber soothes the eye and reduces inflammation. 
 
Chilled Tea Bags - Dip the tea bags in boiling water for some time and keep the tea bags in refrigerator to cool it. Place the cold tea bags over the eye for about half an hour. The tannin present in tea reduces sogginess of the eyes. 
 
Comfrey RootsIf you are suffering from bruising and pain due to black eye, this is the home remedy which can provide you an excellent result.  You can make a paste of comfrey root by grinding it with water. Apply this paste on the affected area once a day to see the changes.  You can also make a decoction of comfrey root by boiling it in water. Dip a clean cloth or cotton ball in this warm decoction and apply it to the bruised area to get much relief from pain. 
 
Arnica - This herb has excellent ability to reduce the swelling caused by black eye.  This herb also helps to heal the tissues and muscles that are damaged by the trauma. It is necessary to use the herb as early as possible to prevent the bruise from turning worse.  You can use the Arnica oil on the affected area for 2-3 times a day to get better and faster results. 
 
Vitamin C - Vitamin c helps in any type of healing process. Cayenne Pepper And Vaseline - This is a popular Chinese remedy to treat black eye. Mix together one tablespoon of cayenne pepper and five tablespoons of melted Vaseline. Mix them well and allow the mix to cool thoroughly. Apply this mix on the affected area. Make sure that the mix does not get into your eyes. After a few hours, the mixture can be wiped off using a wet tissue or cloth.  If the black eye is severe you may have to repeat the remedy at least three times a day to get faster result. 
 
Witch Hazel - Witch hazel is a good healing agent for different types of problems including bruises caused by black eyes. There are different ways to use this home remedy. One way of using this remedy is to soak the cotton pad in the witch hazel and to place it on the affected area for a few minutes.  This will provide soothing feeling and promotes healing. Another way of using this remedy is to prepare a solution of witch hazel, chamomile essential oil and water and applying this solution on the black eye using a clean cloth or cotton ball. Repeat the process 2- 3 times a day to get excellent result.

Most people think of oranges when they hear vitamin C, which is absolutely correct. Actually any of the citrus fruits will give you a healthy dose of vitamin C, in addition to tomatoes, broccoli, green peppers and leafy greens. Avoid juices in glass containers and heat pasteurized juice because light and heat destroy some of the vitamin C. 
 
 
Vitamin E: RDA 8mg for women, 10mg for men, 1 TBSP of canola oil = 9mg 
Good sources of vitamin E are nuts, seeds and their oils. The oils to use when cooking include canola, olive or vegetable. Fatty fishes such as salmon, mackerel, halibut and trout are also good sources of vitamin E. 
            
Vitamin A (synthesized from Beta Carotene): 5000 IU or 3mg, 1 carrot = 12 mg 
Dark green, orange and yellow vegetables and leafy greens are a good source of vitamin A. Fruits such as cantaloupe, peaches and apricots are also good sources. 
            
Polyphenolic antioxidants (resveratrol, flavonoids): No RDA, recommended at 500mg 
Tea, coffee, soy, fruit, olive oil, chocolate, cinnamon, oregano and red wine all contain flavonoids. In addition great sources of flavonoids are onions, apples, citrus fruits, green tea, soy, seeds and nuts. 
  
If you don’t feel that you are getting enough of your antioxidants through your food, then it may be time to change your diet. I don’t recommend you go out and buy the first supplement you find at the store. Bring a list of antioxidant rich foods to the store on your next shopping day and fill your cart with as many of the items as you can. If you still feel like you are missing some of the vital antioxidants on the list then ask your doctor if he/she can recommend a therapeutic brand of vitamin supplements. Therapeutic grade supplements are better for the body because they are made with higher quality ingredients for the body’s absorption.  Plus there is research and testing to back up the use of these supplements. Not all supplements in stores have high quality ingredients and may have additives that you don’t necessarily need. If you look at the ingredient list on the back of a supplement bottle and can’t tell what the ingredients are then steer clear of that supplement. Never ingest supplements that have artificial flavoring or additives (such as Red-6 or Yellow-5).

Antioxidants are all the rage now a days. With the increased amount of knowledge, information and data available about antioxidants, the public is becoming more aware of why we need to include antioxidants in our diets. Our bodies are made up of thousands of unique combinations of substances and chemicals most of which have been identified through medical science. However, understanding what these chemicals do in our bodies is a different story completely. The term antioxidant was originally used for a chemical that prevented the consumption of oxygen. Now it is more commonly known as a chemical that reduces the rate of oxidation reactions.

However, it is not their job to entirely remove them from our system, but to stop formation of new or overproduction of free radicals, and remove them before they do any damage to the body.

Apricots are easy to work into your daily dietary routine. You can by them fresh at the produce department of your local store. Dried apricots are also very handy; you can keep them in your desk at work, in your gym bag or in your car. Like raisin’s, dried apricots are also very complimentary to cereal and ice cream.
